At the entrance to the Mt. Yongmun National Tourist Resort in Yangpyeong County are many sanchae bibimbap restaurants that use wild greens picked on the mountain. You can taste all kinds of foods containing wild greens including sanchae jeongsik, special deodeokgui (roast deodeok) and sanchae beoseotjjige (mushroom stew). Various kinds of unusual wild greens such as chuinamul, daraesun (actinidia arguta shoots), soksae, ggaesun (sesame shoots), yuchae and bandi are prepared in diverse ways in foods that are fragrant and simple. In addition, climbers can drink native rice wine with a rich flavor on the way down the mountain.

Accommodations Information

There are many different types of accommodation in Korea, from Super Deluxe Hotels and Traditional Korean Hanok Houses to Homestay and Camping Grounds. Tourists can choose the type of accommodation based on their plans and budget. Korea offers accommodation with both western-style rooms and traditional Korean-style ondol rooms (with heated floors and futons). Generally, many hotels offer western-style rooms while others offer traditional Korean-style ondol rooms. However, certain motels and yeogwans may only offer ondol rooms.

Types of Accommodation
Hotels
Hotels are classified into five categories: super deluxe (five-star), deluxe (four-star), first class (three-star), second class (two-star), third class (one-star). Generally, a double room in a super deluxe hotel costs approximately 200,000-300,000 won (use of extra services and facilities not included); in a deluxe hotel 100,000-200,000 won, a first class hotel 100,000 won, second class 50,000-100,000 won, third class 30,000-10,000 won. The prices of hotels vary depending on season and location. Hotels above deluxe class usually have a fitness center, sauna, a business center, restaurants and cafes. Hotels add a 10% VAT and 10% service charge

Motels/Inns (Yeogwan)
The most common types of accommodation in Korea are motels and inns (also referred to yeogwan). Many motels and yeogwans are found near bus terminals and train stations in large cities. They are not only easy to access but also inexpensive. Reservations are not required unless it is high season or holidays. Because of the cheap price and easy accessibility, the conditions are not necessarily pleasant. Many only offer ondol rooms, so if you want a western-style room it is a good idea to check beforehand. The prices vary depending on location and facilities. Generally, the cost is about 20,000-40,000 won. However, prices may increase significantly during high season and holidays.

Hostels

Hostels are located in famous cities and regions -- from tourist sites and downtown areas to places that are difficult to reach -- and it is a good idea to make a reservation beforehand. Generally, hostels are very large and offer facilities comparable to hotels. Thus, the price varies considerably from 10,000 won (for single room) to 160,000 won (for a family room). Persons possessing a Hostelling International Card can receive discounts of up to 30%. Hostelling International Cards are available at various Youth Hostels Association offices around the world.

Guesthouses

Guesthouses are inexpensive and a good way to experience Korean culture and meet other foreign tourists. Backpackers can receive information from the owners of the guesthouse. They also offer special weekend programs that allow foreigners to meet Koreans. Guesthouses offer tourists the opportunity to learn about Korea firsthand and to meet new Korean friends. Many guesthouses are remodeled family homes (generally sharing bathrooms) and are nearby downtown areas and tourist destinations. The price is around 15,000-35,000 won a night.

Homestay

Homestay is absolutely the best way to learn and experience Korean culture and lifestyle. The host families can act as guides and provide profound insights on Korean tourist sites and culture. For a relatively small fee these host families are willing to share their home and time. Furthermore, an increasing number of families are offering room and board to foreign travelers. The cost for one night's accommodation usually ranges from 25,000-40,000 won. Cheaper rates are available for long-term accommodation.

Temple Stay

Temple stay was initially established for foreign tourists during the 2002 FIFA World Cup, but the program has been extended due to continued popularity and demand. Temple stay offers a unique experience for tourists to live in a Buddhist temple and experience Korean culture and the lifestyle of Buddhist monks firsthand. It is a truly unique and special type of accommodation. Temple stay operates on an irregular basis depending on the schedules of individual temples. Applications can be made at the Temple Stay Korea homepage (http://eng.templestay.com).

Other (Condominiums/Pensions)

Condominiums are apartment-style lodgings with self-catering facilities, seminar rooms, swimming pools, recreational facilities and nearby restaurants and supermarkets. They are usually located near ski resorts, famous mountains and parks and beaches and are very large in scale. Although condominiums are exclusively rented to members during peak seasons, they can be rented by non-members during off-peak times. The cost differs according to facilities, but are typically around 30,000 to 100,000 won per night. However, there are luxury condominiums that can cost upwards of 200,000 per night. Pensions are a new type of lodgings that have recently appeared in Korea. They are usually located in tourist areas featuring natural scenery and landscapes. They are European-style villas or cottages and provide an excellent place for rest and recreation in a natural setting. There are many forms of pensions, from high-class villas to simple log cabins. They are becoming extremely popular with couples and families.

Makguksu (Mak Noodle)

Cheonseo-ri in Dae-myeon, Yeoju-gun, where the Ipo Bridge crosses the Namhan River, is a village famous nationwide for Makguksu. Cheonseo-ri Makguksu is made mainly of buckwheat and is seasoned with hot spices, differentiated from noodles produced in other areas. Makguksu restaurants in the village commonly serve boiled beef as a main dish along with Makguksu. As the fat is completely removed, the boiled beef is light and savory.

Galbi (Beef Ribs)

Seasoned beef ribs have been famous in Suwon City since 1956, when Hwachunok in Yeongdong Market, a traditional market, began to serve ribs seasoned with natural spices and roasted over a charcoal fire. The ribs are famous for their size and excellent flavor. The secret of Suwon beef ribs is the salt sued to preserve the unique flavor of the meat and produce an unadorned taste.

The greatest reason for the popularity of the ribs is not only the taste but also the ease of eating. Ribs are cut into long pieces and roasted so that diners can enjoy succulent mouthfuls.

Sondubu (Hand-made bean curd) / Dubu Jeongol (Bean)

Pajugol Sondubu was first sold by a small restaurant in Seongnam City that served Korean rice wine with bean curd as a side dish to mountain climbers. The store then began to sell hand-made bean curd as a main dish. Now, about ten restaurants sell the same product. The characteristic of hand-made bean curd is the vivid flavor of the bean and the delicate sensation when swallowing. It is served with kimchi as well as rice and bean sprouts mixed in a large bowl. Add some perilla oil and pepper sauce to the rice and mix to complement the taste of the hand-made bean curd.

Yeongyangbap

In Icheon City there are many restaurants that serve rice in a stone pot with various side dishes. Icheon rice is cooked by combining rice with ginseng, jujube, pine nuts and other cereals into a stone pot. Rice in restaurants approved by Icheon City has a different look and fragrance. It is clean and transparent in color, and very sticky. A table that features this steaming rice along with dongchime (watery kimchi), japchae (noodles), saury, soy bean sauce soup and various greens is fit for a king. Restaurants in Icheon operate together with ceramic pottery exhibitions halls and natural resorts, so visitors can enjoy the food as well as sightseeing.

Steamed Crucian Carp / Hot Pepper Soup

Although known to be good for women's health, crucian carp has been neglected due to its strong fishy smell. However, in Bunwon-ri of Gwangju City, you can experience crucian carp dishes from which the smell has been eliminated using a newly developed cooking method. Groups of women visit the restaurants serving this dish to enjoy the refreshing taste, particularly in late autumn. It is good for preventing adult diseases and promoting healthy skin.

Budaejjige

Budaejjige originates from the presence U.S. Armed Forces in Korea since the Korean War. In Uijeonbu City and elsewhere, food supplied to the U.S Army in Korea, such as ham and sausages, which were highly prized at that time, found its way out of the army camps and was used by some restaurants to make a Korean-style stew called budaejjige. Today, of course, there are few restaurants that make budaejjige with ingredients from U.S. army camps. Budaejjige is prepared using sausage, ham, various vegetables and kimchi. The hot and savory taste of the soup is fantastic.

BEST BLOG

Someori Gukbap (Cow head soup with rice)

In the past, someori gukbap was merely a food for gratifying one's hunger, but gradually it became a delicacy. Gonjiam Someori Gukbap is prepared by boiling the bones of a Korean cow with radish and ginseng and serving with lumps of meat in the thick soup. Gonjiam Someori Gukbap is so famous that Gonjiam is chiefly associated with the dish. Along with someori gukbap, all restaurants in this area serve boiled beef as a main dish.

Haemul Kalguksu (Sea food chopped noodle)

The sea off Chepu Island is famous for the abundance of marine products. Since 1988, when the road linking the land and the island was constructed, Bajirak Kalguksu (noodles with short-necked clams) has become widely appreciated. There are now over twenty Kalguksu restaurants on the island. In particular, the short-necked clams collected on the island are unpolluted, savory and sweet. Because of its large servings and the refreshing taste of the soup, Kalguksu has become a major attraction of Chepu Island.
